From Boys to Men

The trolls who have been here recently seem mainly to have been chaps. A particular sort and an increasingly common sort. They are not the Men we were used to throughout history. Our society is producing emasculated men.

Much has been written and spoken about the 'rights' of 'empowered' women but it seems such empowerment has seeped right down to the bottom, especially in our Female-Dominated schools, to the detriment of masculinity and its proper flowering in our boys.

I could speak a lot simply repeating what my customers often speak about. But I prefer to let them speak for themselves. Even the ladies are beginning to speak up, empowered by a few glasses of Grace.

Given the current deep community outpourings of concern for the senseless violence present on Australian streets at night, the disturbing numbers of little boys being suspended and expelled from our schools, and the decreasing numbers of young men attending and graduating university,  

something is going wrong in the world of our boys. 

I lay blame on society, which seems to have stolen boyhood in the name of a sanitised, politically correct, gender neutral, bland childhood.

I could add in here that the root cause is Socialism and it's main weapon is Feminism.

IMHO, of course. I am but an 'umble Taverner.

One of the world’s leading writers on boys and men, Michael Gurian, believes the invisible drive at the biological core of manhood is the pursuit to prove self-worth. No one can give a man his self-worth – he has to give this to himself. The guidance of good men, of course, helps. 

To find this place, however, boys and men seek external ways to demonstrate potency, victory and independence – and this is what helps shape their search for meaning and purpose in life from a very early age.  

It is the warrior unfolding from within. 

There have been several shifts in society that have undermined our children and particularly impacted on our boy warriors.

Our little warriors are being smothered at birth. Those that get past being aborted, that is.

In days gone by, boys had the freedom to roam unsupervised on adventures that allowed them to be massively engaged in pursuits that helped them to learn and grow using life’s greatest teacher – experience. 

Our modern-day phobia that our world is unsafe, especially for our boys, is creating an environment where they are finding it ever more difficult to find that place of self-worth through external moments of potency and success.  

We now run the risk of creating a generation of frustrated and angry young men. 

Again, IMHO, we have already arrived there.

The dominant male hormone testosterone is associated with sex and aggression and the search for social power, ambition and independence. Another key influencer (alongside cultural conditioning of course) may be that men have more receptors for the hormone vasopressin – which some researchers have associated with territoriality, hierarchy, competition and persistence, as well as the capacity to bond. 

Generally, boys are soft wired to be competitive and active, and are constantly in search of moments to prove their worth and value (in girls and women, oestrogen and oxytocin influence us in different ways, along with their cultural conditioning). 

The playground provides an early opportunity for boys to demonstrate worth but the safe, ‘fantastic plastic’ playgrounds of today are emasculating boyhood. 

We’ve removed the traditional monkey bars, seesaws and maypoles which were all wonderful opportunities to stretch oneself, hurt oneself when a poor decision was made and learn how to play well with other children – this is where we learnt healthy risk management. 

When it is said, "We have..", 'we' have done nothing of the sort.

THEY have. The feminists, the cultural Marxists, the Government dictators who constantly nag, cajole, threaten and force their creeds onto 'society' denigrating anyone who dares to speak otherwise.

Today’s playgrounds are less engaging and statistics show that children are injured more in modern playgrounds than in the scary old playgrounds because they no longer know how to cope with and manage risk. And keeping kids indoors certainly hasn’t made them any safer either. 

The demise of vigorous play as a valid and accepted part of the school playground has also had an impact. Not only did it allow for boys to discharge energy, it was another way children learnt the code of good play versus bad play. 

As boys tend to be less efficient at using language to resolve conflict, this is where they learnt non-verbal cues telling them it was time to leave and walk away. 

Leading play expert Dr Stuart Brown argues that we only develop an understanding of ‘play code’ in our childhood from playing endlessly with other children. 

Without a play code we can badly misread social situations and interpret a threat incorrectly and, without the ability to defuse the situation, this can turn into violence quickly, especially with a bellyful of alcohol. 

Other trends that are sucking the healthy warrior spirit from our young lads include the ban on keeping score in junior sports competitions so nobody under 14 loses (or wins!). This must be so exasperating for lads, another stolen validation. 

Some early years’ centres have banned superhero play so children are not allowed to dress in capes and masks to lead the fight of good versus bad – this actually needs to be encouraged rather than shamed as this courage settles deep within a boy’s psyche. 

We’ve also seen bans on tree climbing, playing chasey and even removing sandpits to be replaced by more mat time, phonics in isolation, more desk work, less free play and homework for 4 year olds. 

If I was a 5 year old today I would be angry too.

THIS is how our misandric society want boys to be like.

Boys need to learn at a young age what happens when they make poor choices in the pursuit of conquering the world. 

Our modern-day warriors need to become accountable for their own actions before they hit the party scenes of late adolescence and make a mistake that may be life-changing. 

We need to celebrate the bruises, the occasional stitches and the rare broken arm because boys learn deeply from real experience and seldom from lectures, especially from well-meaning mums. These wounds are external signs that you are a warrior. 

Our children’s lives tend to be micromanaged, over-supervised and planned, and there is very little freedom and autonomy. 

I believe the impact on boys is particularly negative and increasing levels of depression and mental illness in adolescence may be telling us that there are some very deep instinctual drives that need to be nurtured in a healthy way, rather than denied and crushed. 

As Michael Gurian explains,  

the strong drive for self worth and value is a profound and sacred journey that is the core to a healthy manhood and it starts at a boy’s birth: 

“This core of manhood represents maleness at its best – self sacrificing, devoted to service, loving, wise and powerful and at its worst – brutal, shaming, destructive, dangerous,” Gurian writes. 

We need to seriously consider giving boys back their boyhoods and opportunities for authentic growth in the company of good men, or we are going to continue seeing more and more 'coward-hitting' warriors wreaking havoc in our communities.

Nazis on Ice

The strong connection between Government and Business which we called Fascism reached it's pinnacle in National Socialist Germany and International Socialist Russia. Odd how Fascism is deemed the opposite of socialism, isn't it.

Of course all that is history. Yes? Nowadays the business aspects have given way to simple rent-seeking from a coterie of academics and NGOs who exist in unholy alliance with Government. At the expense of the taxpayer.

I promised I would get back to the fiasco on ice of the early new year. Things have started to be 'costed' and the taxpayer is once again going to be well out of pocket. Some will be giggling like the loons they are (their entire salary and perks as well as taxes are paid for by real taxpayers) and other more rational folk who work productively to pay taxes with be spitting icicles.

It is close to home in more ways than one. Stand on the Tavern roof and you can see the Capital of Antarctica in Kingston. (Well, on tip toe). The Climate Change wallahs congregate there, mixing with real scientists like crows wandering in a penguin colony.

The saga just keeps going. The Chinese Icebreaker  sent to rescue the Russian ship - Remember the Russian ship? It is still there - also became stuck, and has asked for help so the Aurora Australis with 52 extra passengers rescued from the Russian Charter boat had to stay nearby to help.

The Aurora is based in Hobart. A well known sight in the harbour.

Twenty two Russian sailors were trapped on board the Russian boat — the Akademik Sholaskiy.

The other scientists in Antarctica still don’t have their equipment.  

Costs for everyone involved are continuing to rise. Though there is a free-for-all on social media…

TAXPAYERS will foot a $400,000 bill for the rescue of a group of climate scientists, tourists and journalists from a stranded Russian research vessel – an operation that has  

blown the contingency budget of Australia’s Antarctic program  

and disrupted its scientific work.  

The Antarctic Division in Hobart said it was revising plans and considering airlifting urgently needed scientific equipment that could not be unloaded from Aurora Australis before the ship was diverted from the Casey base to rescue the novice ice explorers just before Christmas 

The climate scientists and passengers aren’t free yet, their boat is waiting around to help the Chinese icebreaker. 

The rescue bill continued to mount yesterday as the return of the Aurora Australis to Casey base was delayed after the Chinese vessel Xue Long notified rescue authorities it had concerns about its ability to move back into open water due to heavy ice. 

The Australian icebreaker was put on standby and ordered to remain in open water as a precautionary measure. 

As usual, under the Treaty of the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), ships must respond to a distress message, and the costs are a “matter for the ship owners after the event…  These can include fuel costs, crew costs and loss of revenue.” 

Ultimately the costs could be millions: 

In a debriefing on the rescue mission, Australian Maritime Safety Authority general manager John Young said the ships involved in the rescue would each be responsible for their own costs. 

The costs, which would run to millions of dollars, could ultimately result in legal action between the ships’ insurance companies and the owners of the stranded Russian research vessel that sparked the rescue. 

I wonder what the fine print says on the agreement between the Australasian Antarctic Expedition and the Russian Charter boat?

And all this for what, you may wonder.?

The Icy Winds of the Hateful Left

Are there no depths the lefties cannot plumb? The warmth and welcoming rooms and bars of the Tavern are very different from the world beyond the hedges around our gardens. But there are so many people outside, baying from the Abyss that note has to be taken of them and what they do.

Barely a day goes by without some green stupidity; some atheistic outrage against people who simply want everyone to love one another; some scientific rent-seeker demanding public monies to pursue his or her obsession;  some pervert suing a baker for not  wanting to provide a 'wedding' cake; some regulational mendacity imposed by the collectivists. And generally accompanied by hate, invective, intolerance and 'punishment'.

They play the schoolyard bully game of "Let's you and him fight".

Stupidity has its comeuppance. Nature often takes care of itself and we may laugh.

But all too often these days it is the innocent who suffer from the un-natural hatreds of the perverse.

From what I gather she is a warm and loving young woman who has developed from a rather 'firm' Christian to a more 'Loves the Sinner but not the Sin" sort.  A lot like my own attitude. Comments have even condemned her for that attitude and practice.

The Abyss howls.

It is not only 'left' identifiable people, of course.  There has been a general coarsening of comments over the few years that the 'service' has been open. Many of the worst, most foul-mouthed commenters appear to be young men; Boys.

There have been a few louts coming to this Tavern too.

In the Men's Movement there is a proportion of boys, having been raised in 'single-parent families ' (read single mother ones) and through a feminist-dominated ( a favourite feminist word) education Industry. Boys have been dumbed-down.

Moral behaviour has been diminished almost deliberately.

Oz has its own legion of feminist young women in the public eye, on TV and in newspapers whose 'tweets' are frankly gutter-press. These are virtually ALL leftists. Their hatred simply pours out. Filth too. All too often it is other, Conservative or Christian women who find themselves targeted.

Point it out and they will, as Julia - Liar - Gillard would did, shout 'misogyny'.

Emanuella is a 'private' individual, unlike the Public one I mentioned the other day. Senator Bernadi.

Bill Muehlenberg, a regular here and having his own spot on the right side of the page, did what I have not yet had the time to do: read the words that have caused so much howling against Bernadi.

Unlike perhaps 90 per cent of the haters bashing Cory Bernardi on various websites, I actually have his new book and have actually read all 164 pages of it (and all 137 footnotes). So that might make my review slightly more reliable than a good hunk of those from the various secular left trolls. 

The reason for their utter wrath and vile remarks is clear: Bernardi dares to say that which is politically incorrect.  

For example, he thinks it is not a good thing that our most trusted institutions of marriage and family are under attack;  

that killing up to 100,000 unborn babies a year is deemed acceptable;  

and that the Christian faith has been under so much attack – even though it actually has been a force for good in this nation.  

No wonder the poisonous barbs are being unleashed upon him. 

The South Australian Senator makes a very simple case: the mainstream values which a majority of Australian support are well worth promoting and defending.  

Things like faith, family and freedom –  

all the things the radical left so love to disparage and trash. 

Bernardi defines a conservative simply as one who seeks “to protect and defend the structures and values that have allowed our nation to achieve the traditional freedoms and prosperity that we enjoy today.”  

And by revolution he means the need to “restore conservative values to their rightful place as the guiding principles of our civilisation and the cornerstone of governance.” 

Everything that the destroyers want to stop him speaking about.

In his chapter on faith and its importance, he rightly notes what a valuable role it has played both in the foundation of this nation and in its growth and development. 

And by faith he does not mean just any old generic faith, but specifically the Christian worldview which did so much for Australia in particular and the West in general.  

He notes that even those with no religious identity “will likely identify with values that would not exist if it weren’t for the historical role that Christianity has played in shaping” Australia. 

He notes that the increased secularisation of late has been closely connected to shifting morality – indeed, to a moral freefall.  

He discusses the culture wars, including the battle for the sanctity of life. He notes how secular elites such as Peter Singer have pushed for not just abortion and euthanasia, but infanticide as well. 

Bernardi deals with the separation of church and state myth, and examines how religious freedom is increasingly coming under attack by those committed to the secular left worldview. He also notes how counterfeit religious movements are arising, such as the radical green agenda.

Men and women of Good Will HAVE to stand up against the anti-human tide.

I make the point that most of the invective and hatred comes from the Left. I will make the argument later on in the year for those that are too blind to see it.

The message in the video above points to one aspect in particular. The use and misuse of Sexuality. But it is but one part of a broad attack on Humanity by Evil, in particular the Cultural Marxist plague.

Come out Fighting

The year has started off with some heavy hitters coming into the Tavern to quench their thirst. Some Knights - of both sexes. Yes, we quite approve of strong women showing their metal especially when dressed in it.

 

 

My previous existence as a Knight has enabled me to see a Knight far off even in the dark. I recognise Orcs too, and we have had a few of those around here this past week or four, baying and snarling. Dom and Ben, the flower pot men, and assorted anonymous shadow people pissing on the welcome mat outside.

 

But this week we see a chap and yet another woman challenging un-lady-like behaviour from farm-yard wenches and their lack-lustre manginas. And this is no practice joust.

 

Senator Cory Bernadi has earned his spurs and carries a lance well. This week he walked his horse infront of The Monstrous Regiment so they could all get a good look at a warrior, and he they. And he was joined, with just the Pacific Ocean between, facing the Orcish horde, by Suzanne Venker who was there beside Camille Paglia. An Oz-US alliance.

They were there to take arms against the destructive forces of Feminism. It has to be done by both men and women of courage and Principle.

Cory Bernardi accuses some women using abortion as form of birth control

Cringe at the Editorial Blue Pencil. Only some lefty jerk could have qualified that in such a weasely way.

CONTROVERSIAL Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi has labelled pro-choice advocates "pro-death" and accused some women of using abortion as "an abhorrent form of birth control".

By the Lord Harry, that is throwing down a challenge. 

But why call him 'controversial'?  That is a lefty term for speaking the truth, of course.

By their fruits, ye shall know them. But read on.

 

Cory mounts his steed.

In his new book The Conservative Revolution, Bernardi said it was "horrendous and unacceptable" that the abortion "death industry despatches 80,000 to 100,000 unborn children [in Australia] every year".

Indeed it is. Horrendous. But seemingly quite acceptable in our modern, caring, sharing Menda City.

The Abbott Government backbencher also denounces non-traditional families, surrogacy and euthanasia, laying out five pillars for a "conservative revolution" in which he calls for the restoration of the traditional family model over all others, the ABC reports.
 

"Given the increasing number of 'non-traditional' families, there is a temptation to equate all family structures as being equal or relative," he writes.

 

"Why then the levels of criminality among boys and promiscuity among girls who are brought up in single-parent families, more often than not headed by a single mother? 

"What is missing in the push for human cloning, in vitro fertilisation and surrogacy, for example, is the understanding that children come into families as gifts, not commodities."
 

This of course brought a howling from the FeminOrc ranks and much shaking of spears. How dare he call a child a gift when everyone knows it is a burden and a fiend from the fetid Patriarchy, imposed on a mother to keep her oppressed.

In a call to arms to fellow conservatives, Bernardi writes that Australia has lost its direction in part due to the absence of religion in politics and says the greatest threats to Christianity are the "green agenda" and Islam, which he believes to be incompatible with Western beliefs.

At this point he should of course have been pointing his lance directly at the leading FeminOrcs rather than at the grass and the rather fecund Islamist sitting in the sidelines. Fine, courageous Knight he is but he does need a warm-up joust or two to get him pointing the right weapon in the right direction.

"I believe that by stripping God and religious principles from our culture (and our politics) we have become a nation which does not know which port it is sailing to," he writes.
 

His wife keeps him alert to The Woman, with a Political finger at his ear.

Senator Bernardi, a key member of the Liberal party's right wing also advocates a return to individual workplace agreements despite Prime Minister Tony Abbott acknowledging that the former Howard government's WorkChoices policy was "dead, buried and cremated".

It is always difficult to control your horse with so much shouting going on, but his bolted back to the tent at that point.

South Australian Senator Cory Bernardi is a conservative who is not afraid to share his convictions in the public arena. For daring to do so, he of course becomes the object of huge doses of hate, derision and intolerance – mainly by those who shout ‘tolerance’ the loudest of course. 

He has just released a new book and predictably all hell is breaking loose. In the book The Conservative Revolution he courageously seeks to speak the truth. For example, he dares to speak against the slaughter of the unborn. He dares to be concerned about creeping sharia. He dares to want to see children protected by living with their own mother and father. 

Every lefty secularist in the country by now has already called for his head on a platter. If crucifixion were still in, they would be calling for that as well.  

And as usual, some spineless wonders in his own party have been distancing themselves from him. But we expect all that.

Then we were fortunate to see a Knightly Woman armoured with 'Communications Skills' wielding a few well sharpened words. Suzanne Venker has her own armoury of course, and a fine stock she has too, but came to the field with some choice weapons from Camille's tent.

She spoke directly at the facing ranks, awakening whatever semblance of humanity there might have been there.

There’s a reason the text version of Camille Paglia’s opening statement at the Munk Debate, “Resolved: Men Are Obsolete”  garnered 10,000 likes on Facebook and received more than one thousand comments at Time.com : it hit a nerve. 

It was a nerve that needed to be hit, and Paglia did it beautifully.
Not only was her choice of words fitting, she delivered them with the perfect amount of exasperation. 

America must revisit its distorted view of gender equality, implored Paglia, and start being fair to the other half of the human race.  

Men’s success in fields such as medicine, engineering and technology have done more to liberate women from the constraints of their former lives than a busload of feminists could ever hope to do. 

It’s time to stop pretending men are oppressors and to start recognizing the extraordinary contributions men have made to society

It is a truth rarely acknowledged: Men’s success in fields such as medicine, engineering and technology have done more to liberate women from the constraints of their former lives than a busload of feminists could ever hope to do. 

In almost every era, it was a male invention that provided women with the means to an easier life.  

In the past, just getting through the day was a full-time job. Those days are now gone -- because of men. 

It is their ingenuity and hard work that provided women, mothers in particular, with what they’ve always craved: time. It gave them the kind of cushy lives our grandmothers could only dream about. 

If men are born Neanderthals, as the culture suggests, why would they create products that ease women’s burden?  

Only those who carry a grudge as a result of personal biases would ignore this fact and instead blame society for their woes.

This group needs something to do with their “putative leftism,” or “implicit privileging of bourgeois values and culture,” notes Paglia.  

The irony is that it’s because of the sweet life men created that these women even have time to ruminate over their place in the world -- and demonize the very group to whom they should be indebted. 

“A peevish, grudging rancor against men has been one of the most unpalatable and unjust features of second- and third-wave feminism.  

Men’s faults, failings and foibles have been seized on and magnified into gruesome bills of indictment. Ideologue professors at our leading universities indoctrinate impressionable undergraduates with carelessly fact-free theories alleging that gender is an arbitrary, oppressive fiction with no basis in biology.” 

It is precisely this propaganda -- the idea that biology isn’t real, and that men are prone to oppress women -- that’s caused women so much anguish.  

“Is it any wonder,” asks Paglia, “that so many high-achieving young women find themselves in the early stages of their careers in chronic uncertainty or anxiety about their prospects for an emotionally fulfilled private life?” 

It is no wonder at all. Women must accept that what they’ve been taught by the culture just isn’t true. They will never be content until they do.

When asked, "What kind of “damage” has feminism done?" by someone at the bar afterwards, Suzanne made the succinct point.

The idea that equality means sameness. Women and men had specific roles, and there were reasons they were locked into those roles. The changes that have occurred since then have allowed or forced people out of those gender roles, mostly because of birth control.  

But the purpose of feminism is to yank the feminine out of the woman,  

to give you this faux sense of equality. Just because men and women are equal in worth or value doesn’t mean they’re interchangeable or the same. Feminism taught women to reject marriage and motherhood, go out into the workforce, and compete with men.  

That has been extremely destructive.

Men abandoned in the Ice-Floes

There we were trying to engaged in dissecting the costs to Taxpayers of rescuing 'Warmist-Mongers' in Antarctica when uproar broke out about Lana's defence of men yesterday. The conversation became ice-bound despite feminist hot-air.

I was going to say what folks were saying about the rescue; that 'passengers (the euphemism for global warming 'scientists' and hangers-on, including several media 'useful fools') were being ferried off by helicopter.

I was going to say what folks in the bars were saying about the enormous cost to taxpayers, internationally, of rescuing them; of the total lack of media comment about so many 'scientists' and 'tourists' in ships and planes and vehicles in the icy continent having the very 'anthropogenic' effect they were there to complain about. I was going to tell of the laughter at all these earnest warmists expecting to find melted ice but got stuck in ice that refused to melt for them.

A third effect we are barely starting to see may ripple on for months — that’s when mass-media victims realize that the “Russian Tourist ship” was really a boat load of Australian and New Zealander scientists, paid for mostly by taxpayers and loaded and advised by supposedly “expert” climate scientists. This misinformation was despite the boat having BBC, and Guardian media on board, and Fairfax press in one of the rescue icebreakers.

 The head of France’s polar science institute has voiced fury at the misadventures of a Russian ship trapped in Antarctic ice, deriding what he called a tourists’ trip that had diverted resources from real science.

He said the trip itself was a ‘pseudo-scientific expedition’ that, because it had run into difficulties, had drained resources from the French, Chinese and Australian scientific missions in Antarctica. 

Because of the rescue operations, French scientists had had to scrap a two-week oceanographic campaign this month using the Astrolabe, Frenot said. 

‘The Chinese have had to cancel all their scientific programme, and my counterpart in Australia is spitting tacks with anger, because their entire summer has been wiped out.’ 

But then Douglas chimed in with a more urgent matter. Health.

I think most people agree that good health is important. Everyone's health. The Taxpayer funds a huge amount of research into illnesses and disease (when we are not wasting it on the Warmist Wind-Cult effigies) and we all expect to get some benefit from all the money and effort. But it seems that even there men get a raw deal in the funding bizzo.

Men's health ranked 36th for federal government health research funding in 2012, behind sexually transmitted infections and just ahead of parasitic infections, an exclusive analysis by News Corp Australia shows. 

Since 2003 women's health research received more than $833 million from the National Health and Medical Research Council compared to less than $200 million for men.

Other conversations in these bars have looked at the 'Pay Gap' where Feminists, feminist Government Ministers and so forth complain that men get paid more than women. "It not fair", goes the whine, which gets louder than a wind turbine in a gale. They never mention that men pay more tax too. Especially with the 'progressive taxation' rort. But does the tax money get spent on men?

Around the world, health spending on women tends to be notably higher than on men, even when ignoring maternity-related expenditure.

If you listen to the political dialogue, however, you could be forgiven for thinking that the opposite is true: feminist organisations often pick on corner issues to 'prove' that despite the evidence of budgets by national governments and most charities, men get more medical assistance than women. 

Men's Health Australia has highlighted an article showing the disparity on cancer spending in Australia. Greg Andresen from Men's Health Australia says health research funding shouldn't be a competition between the sexes but he admits men's health advocacy is decades behind women's.

A spectacular gender gap has resulted in men's health problems being allocated a quarter of the funding women's health research gets, ranked just ahead of parasitic infections. 

This is even though men die four and a half years earlier than women, and are 60 per cent more likely to die from cancer.  

Almost 20 years ago a detailed, long-term study was started on health but this was restricted to females only. Australia got its first men's health policy in 2008 and the Ten to Men longitudinal study into men's health only began in 2011 and to date, has not published any findings. 

The Cancer Council Australia says that "Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australia and the third most common cause of cancer death." Yet the Australian Government admits that it only spends a tiny fraction of its cancer budget on this male-specific cancer. 

The report, Health system expenditure on cancer and other neoplasms in Australia: 2008-09, shows, after adjusting for inflation, spending on cancer rose by 56% between 2000-01 and 2008-09, from $2,894 million to $4,526 million (excluding national population screening programs).

 The Australian Government, through Cancer Australia, has provided funding to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) of $3.9 million over three years (2011-2014) to provide national, evidence-based information, resources and psychosocial support for men affected by prostate cancer and their families.  

While one side of the government boasts that it spent over $4,000,000,000 (That 4 Billion) annually on cancer and other neoplasms in 2008/9, another part of the government expects to appease men by saying that it spent an average of $1,300,000 (that's 1.3 million) per year - enough for one small room of science research- on the primary cancer that only affects men.

The Australian government will continue to ignore men's health just so long as men are willing to vote for politicians who don't care about them. Men are used to sacrificing themselves for others but 'charity begins at home' and it's long gone time when every man asked their politicians to care for men and children, as well as women.

And the fault? Well it is men's fault of course. Everyone agrees. Well everyone in the decision-making seats. Men do not look after themselves like women do.

Isn't that a good reason to focus a bit of attention there?

Children don't pay much attention to looking after themselves either. Do we blame them and refuse to fund their health needs? Do we blame the blind for being blind and bumping into things or not getting out enough? Do we  blame the global warmists for wasting taxpayers money on jaunts that can only make matters worse?

The lack of appropriate resources for men, and even the lack of any serious concern for the well-being of men is a significant part of the male suicide rate being so high. It is similar to the UK.

Jane Powell, CEO of the UK’s only national male suicide prevention charity, CALM, told BBC Radio 4’s today programme that the Department for Health was failing to target suicide prevention work at men, because unlike other special interest groups, “we don’t really see men as needing help in anyway or as being vulnerable”.

In 2010, there were 4,532 suicides recorded in England and Wales alone, of which 3,421 (75%) were males.

Suicide is the biggest killer of young men in the UK.

Russian Rescue

Icy conditions pervaded the most southerly continent over the past few weeks, as is usual. Heck, who would want to go to Antarctica anyway? The Russians of course !

The news in Oz has been full of the ill-fated but highly feted trip taken down there by a Russian ship carrying 'tourists'. Tourists my Knightly arse. They were 'warmists', that early 21C sect that is convinced that what we humans do is effecting the climate, especially the ice around the poles. They told everyone before-hand that they were going there to collect the evidence that the ice is melting and we are all doomed.

As fate would have it they came unstuck - or rather, Stuck. Stuck fast in the ice that was supposed to have melted. I will tell of that and more tomorrow. The cost is still being totted up.

Meanwhile a Russian came into the Tavern yesterday, for a pint of our best. My friend Lana.

We were just discussing the events in Antarctica when she stopped mid-sentence and sat, mouth open, looking at the wall.   She was staring at a photo that some wag had pinned to the dart board. She burst out laughing when she realized it was a target.

The caption under the photo said:

Please don't tell me that pinning Germaine Greer to a dart-board is misogyny. It has little to do with hating woman and a lot to do with deriding a fatuous example of a modern Feminist.

But it set Lana off on a tangent. Thank the Lord Harry she speaks English so well or the customers' ears would have turned red. Maybe it was the talk of the ice, or being stuck in the ice, and maybe Germaine's icy looks, but Lana became thoughtful.

"One of my most vivid childhood memories is a near tragedy on a frozen lake ...in my home town near the outskirts of Rostov on Don.  

...I was walking home from school with my grandfather ...we could see skaters on the frozen lake a few hundred yards from the street. As we turned off the main street there was no sound except the crunching of our boots in the snow.  

A scream broke the silence and we instinctively looked towards the lake.  

Two skaters, a mother and her daughter, had fallen through the ice. Grandfather began running towards the lake. It amazed me how fast he could move considering he had lost a foot in the war.  

I followed Grandfather as quickly as I could, but we were beaten to the lake shore by a group of young soldiers who were already crawling on their bellies across the ice, in single file towards the two women flailing around in the freezing water.  

The soldiers were joined by some other men who had rushed out of one of the cafes. They brought some ladders to lay out on the ice to spread the weight of the rescuers.  

The women were pulled to safety and dragged bodily to the shore, passed from one man to the next until they were safely on the bank. The women, a mother and daughter were wrapped in blankets, fed hot soup and bundled into a truck to take them to hospital just in case.  

The crowd dispersed. The soldiers and the other men drifted back into the cafes to resume their meals and a short while later, grandfather and I were sitting with my parents, toasting ourselves in front of the big stove. Grandfather began telling stories of the war; tales of stoic endurance, boundless determination and heroic deeds.  

He always admonished me to remember that the bounties of my comfortable childhood had been paid for by all those men who had never returned home. My brother had once asked him why he had fought for Stalin.  

"Oh no" my Grandfather replied.  

"We didn't fight for Stalin.  

We fought for the women and children of Russia."

Grandfather left early that night and trudged back through the town, braving one of the famous white storms, to reach the hospital where his wife, my grandmother, was recuperating from a painful operation on her eyes. He would sit and read to her through the night as she drifted in and out of sleep, until finally he would be driven from the clinic by a stern nurse telling him to go and get some rest.

MALE ACTS OF BRAVERY

I have seen many acts of incredible bravery on the news.  

Men who didn't hesitate to drag people from the wreckage during the awful metro bombings in Moscow; men who stormed an aircraft in Perm when hijackers threatened to shoot hostages; men who threw themselves into the icy waters of the Volga to rescue people from a sinking ferry. 

Whenever there is an earthquake, an avalanche, a tsunami or a hurricane,  

it is the men of any nation who will instinctively  

rush to help. 

It is the men who will put their own lives on the line if they have to, to save others.  

When the crisis is over, it is the men who will clear roads, repair bridges, restore power lines and begin to re-build. 

I often wonder if Germaine Greer has ever done anything even remotely as valuable as the men she has spent her life ridiculing. 

But there are also the ordinary heroes. Billions of men who work hard and often do dangerous jobs in order to support women and children, and in order to keep women and children safe and housed and fed.

So Germaine Greer can spew her infantile paranoia as much as she likes. She can convince herself and other gullible women that the world doesn't need these masculine qualities, but she is deluding herself.  

Our civilization was built by men. Our communities are maintained by men. We are kept safe by men. Wouldn't it be nice if feminists could stop ridiculing them and maybe even express some gratitude from time to time? 

Men are our fathers and grandfathers, our brothers and sons, our friends and colleagues. It is their masculine qualities that make them what they are.  

Men are the builders and inventors, the explorers and defenders, the pioneers and the discoverers.  

We need men, and if Germaine Greer and her fellow feminists don't care about the damage they are doing to men, maybe they should think about what they are doing to women.  

The "patriarchy" Greer rages against has always been designed first and foremost to keep women and children safe.  

But if men begin to show the same contempt for women as feminists show for men, then we women are going to be in a lot of trouble.  

In western nations now there is definitely a hardening of attitudes among men towards women in general. Decades of feminism has taught men that women have nothing but contempt for them. They are beginning to wake up.  

Feminists who say they want gender equality should be very very careful what they wish for. 

So now I am grown up and I live in Ireland. But whenever I hear some half-witted feminist denigrating men in general, my first thought is always of that brave young man, who risked his life to save two strange women, long ago in the depths of a frozen Russian winter.

It does us well to have a clear eye for Reality.
