The Everyday Hero

Any man can be a Hero, and a Saint.  Circumstance can bring out the very best in good men. We everyday sinners have a hope and a chance to rise to the occasion and prove our worth.

Here in Oz, where we have had many a share of natural disasters, we have been watching the inundation of Houston, Texas, with interest.  Our prayers go out to those people greatly affected, who have lost their goods and chattels, their homes and in some cases their lives.

And we have watched Men rise to the challenge of Charity.

Its What Men Do.

The innundation of New Orleans, in Louisiana, some years back saw the rise and demonstrable courage of the Cajun Navy: private, everyday Americans forming up and going to the aid of their compatriots, without Government backing or financing. They used their own time, energy, boats and money.... and Charity from their hearts.

And they are at work again for their neighbours in Texas.

Cayman Sartin told us a truth:
Let this sink in for a minute.....Hundreds and hundreds of small boats pulled by countless pickups and SUVs from across the South are headed for Houston.
Almost all of them driven by men.
They're using their own property, sacrificing their own time, spending their own money, and risking their own lives for one reason: to help total strangers in desperate need.
Most of them are by themselves. Most are dressed like the redneck duck hunters and bass fisherman they are.
Many are veterans.
The media will, as it has already, dimminish their efforts. Hollywood will take the disaster movie meme to laud women at men's expense.  Meanwhile in the real world it is men who protect and nurture the women and children.
Most are wearing well-used gimme-hats, t-shirts, and jeans; and there's a preponderance of camo. Most are probably gun owners, and most probably voted for Trump.
These are the people the Left loves to hate, the ones Maddow mocks. The ones Maher and Olbermann just *know* they're so much better than.

These are The Quiet Ones.
They will give of themselves. Others will give what they can. Like President Trump, who while not even taking his Presidential salary has given One Million Dollars from his own pockets to aid the dispossessed. We await the Clintons to follow suit but they may have to give a couple of $500,000 speeches  to bankers and enemy countries first. Even then.....
They don't wear masks and tear down statues.
They don't, as a rule, march and demonstrate. And most have probably never been in a Whole Foods.

But they'll spend the next several days wading in cold, dirty water; dodging gators and water moccasins and fire ants; eating whatever meager rations are available; and sleeping wherever they can in dirty, damp clothes.
Others in Houston are already lining up to volunteer their time and enegy too.  Ordinary men and women. Charitable. Heroic.
Their reward is the tears and the hugs and the smiles from the terrified people they help.
They'll deliver one boatload, and then go back for more.
When disaster strikes, it's what men do.
Real men. Heroic men. American men.
And then they'll knock back a few shots, or a few beers with like-minded men they've never met before, and talk about fish, or ten-point bucks, or the benefits of hollow-point ammo, or their F-150.
And the next time they hear someone talk about "the patriarchy", or "male privilege", they'll snort, turn off the TV and go to bed.

In the meantime, they'll likely be up again before dawn.
To do it again.
Until the helpless are rescued. And the work's done.

They're unlikely to be reimbursed. There won't be medals.
They won't care.
They're heroes.
And it's what they do.
God, Family and Country. That was the priority order of a famous family on US TV a while ago.  The Duck Dynasty TV series featured the Robertsons, a Louisiana bayou family operating a thriving business hunting alligators while staying true to their family values and lifestyle. Led by Phil Robertson who created the Duck Commander brand, the family and its exploits had become a top-rated show on TV.

They were fired, of course, for being uncompromisingly family and Christian oriented.

Men.

Hairy Men. Stong Men. Treuwe Men.

God Bless men.

I do not have to ask, as He came down to do not just that but to save us all.

Raise a glass, a pot, a tankard to the fine men of Louisiana.

Heroes.

Pax

    1. Yes, we all are. I was pleased to be able to show this. The Men deserve recognition. Now..... what you could do is show me examples of ladies also doing the hard yards in this disaster. I know there are many, but the feminists are slow to show us any.

The Tavern gets rowdy visitors from time to time. Some are brain dead and some soul dead. They attack customers and the bar staff and piss on the carpets. Those people will not be allowed in anymore. So... Be Nice..
