But excess has allowed the flow...Excessive perhaps. But excess has allowed the flowering of so many fine aspects of life. It really depends on how the excess is used. But the apathy and self-indulgent points are well made. We waste. We could be doing 'good'. Excessive wealth seems to lead inevitably to decadence. When a nation has things too easy it becomes soft, apathetic, self-indulgent. Its inhabitants become more and more like spoilt children.dfordoomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02306293859869179118noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-776872662073607566.post-38133360125987076772018-05-24T11:35:35.620+10:002018-05-24T11:35:35.620+10:00All very sound points. Yes there are other things ...All very sound points. Yes there are other things to aspire to and we should devote effort there. But there is nothing wrong with increasing our wealth. With wealth comes facility to 'do' what we otherwise could not do.

We find it hard enough to define wealth as it is. Our gizmos proliferate by the day: out food is assured via a very long and complex supply chain: building homes is to a variable pattern; and possible only by moving forward. We do not know how to stop and stand still - because there is always the next chap who strives - and we all know what happens when we go backward.

Yes we are rich enough already, but we can lose it all in a trice.Amfortashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07474382097575605017noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-776872662073607566.post-66954685358685337822018-05-24T11:00:33.541+10:002018-05-24T11:00:33.541+10:00We are the world’s fourteenth-biggest economy and ...We are the world’s fourteenth-biggest economy and could easily do with more growth.

Why?

Isn't this a big part of the problem - the worship of the Holy GDP? Measuring the worth of a society by money. We measure Australia's worth by its GDP. We measure the worth of individuals by how much money they have. What a sad way of looking at the world.

Is there nothing else to aspire to apart from getting richer? Getting richer usually turns out to be an illusion. This is a richer country today than it was a few decades ago but it's a much less pleasant place in which to live and it's full of people who are much less happy.

The truth is that we're plenty rich enough already, in strictly material terms. We don't need growth. We are choking on our own material prosperity.dfordoomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02306293859869179118noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-776872662073607566.post-52302849861041620852018-05-24T03:59:56.954+10:002018-05-24T03:59:56.954+10:00“Clients rather than mendicants”
